The US special representative to Afghanistan met with a Taliban delegation in Abu Dhabi, reiterating that the legitimacy of the Taliban depends on their treatment of Afghanistan’s women.
In a statement on Twitter on Wednesday (December 7th), West announced that he met with Mullah Yaqub in Abu Dhabi. “The country’s economic and social stability and the Taliban’s domestic and international legitimacy depend enormously on their treatment of Afghanistan’s mothers and daughters,” the statement reads as such.
In the meeting with Mawlawi Mohammed Yaqub, he raised “the deteriorating human rights situation, particularly for women and girls,” the statement added.
“Shared interests in an Afghanistan that’s stable, prosperous and at peace,” has been discussed in the meeting, according to the statement.
“I called on the Taliban to respect women and girls’ rights to be educated and to work so that they can support their families,” West added.
“We also discussed Afghanistan’s security situation, the Taliban’s continuing efforts against Daesh, steps to improve the business environment, and the int’l community’s robust response to the on-going humanitarian crisis,” West noted.
Former president, Hamid Karzai, Mullah Yaqub and Tom West are in the UAE these days. West had previously said that he met with the former president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai.
