Kabul – The UN Secretary-General condemned the attack on worshipers in Kunduz, saying the killing of civilians was a violation of fundamental human rights. The Islamic State in Khorasan Province (IS-KP) has claimed responsibility for a deadly suicide attack on a Shia mosque in Kunduz province. The United Nations mission to Afghanistan said that the blast killed and wounded more than 100 civilians.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres tweeted on Friday, condemning the deadly attack on a Shiite mosque in the northern Kunduz province of Afghanistan.
“Attacks targeting civilians exercising their right to freely practice their religion are violations of fundamental human rights and international humanitarian law,” Guterres tweeted.
At least 50 people have been killed and 143 others injured in an attack on worshippers at the Saidabad Mosque of Kunduz. Local Taliban officials said the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber.
The Islamic State in Khorasan Province (IS-KP) claimed responsibility for the attack. The ISIS group has said the attack was carried out by Mohammad Uighuri.
The attack has provoked widespread condemnations. It is the deadliest attack since the deadly blast at the entrance to Kabul airport on August 26.
