Rina Amiri, the US Special Envoy for Afghan Women says the Taliban cannot ignore half of Afghanistan’s population. It has been 400 days that girls above the sixth grade have been deprived of education.
In a series of tweets Tuesday, Rina Amiri said: “It has been 400 days since the Taliban effectively banned girls from school. Moreover, they’re increasingly hollowing out and disrupting university education, particularly targeting Hazara women & girls.”
Amiri stated that the Taliban are increasingly disrupting the university education of girls, especially the Hazaras.
“There are credible reports of the Taliban expelling Hazara women from Kabul University’s dorms, jeopardizing their educational future, & reports of women being turned away from college entrance exams deemed “too difficult,” Amiri said.
“The Taliban can’t deny half the population education & work opportunities & claim to move Afghanistan towards economic independence. Education of all Afghans, including women and girls, is key to lifting Afghanistan out of poverty and restoring hope,” she added.
Since the Taliban regime returned to power in August last year, it has not reopened girls’ schools despite international pressures.
