Sources in Kabul say that dozens of retirees, including retired women, have staged a protest in front of the Pension Fund Directorate, which operates under Taliban control.
Sources reported on Tuesday, September 16, that these women, after four years of waiting and remaining silent despite the Taliban’s widespread repression, took to the streets demanding the payment of their pensions.
According to them, the Taliban have not paid retirees’ pensions for more than four years, leading to repeated protests.
Retirees in the country have previously demonstrated several times in front of the Taliban-controlled Pension Fund Directorate, but have so far received no satisfactory response.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, the Taliban’s Ministry of Finance announced that it had set a timetable for the payment of pensions to employees of nine government institutions.
In March 2024, Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban Supreme Leader, announced the dissolution of Afghanistan’s pension system and issued a decree ordering both civilian and military institutions to stop deducting pension contributions from employees’ monthly salaries.
He also issued a separate decree ordering the formation of a special tribunal to decide on the payment of retirees’ pensions. In another eight-article decree, he approved the payment of pensions for “some” retired employees of government institutions, based on the “religious ruling” of this tribunal.
