Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that the “historic Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” has been electronically signed by the United States and Iran and will take effect immediately.
Writing on X on Wednesday evening, June 17, Sharif said the agreement was signed by the presidents of both countries and endorsed by Pakistan in its role as mediator.
According to Sharif, the first steps under the agreement will include Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States will lift its naval blockade against Iran.
He added that the agreement demonstrates both sides’ commitment to resolving tensions through diplomacy.
Sharif further stated that Pakistan, in cooperation with Qatar, will host the official signing ceremony in Switzerland on June 19, 2026.
The Pakistani prime minister also thanked Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt for helping facilitate the process. He additionally acknowledged the role of Asim Munir in advancing the negotiations.
