Media outlets under Taliban control have reported that 7,656 carats of emeralds extracted in Panjshir province have been sold.
Bakhtar News Agency reported on Tuesday, August 11, citing Saifuddin Laton, spokesperson for the Taliban governor in Panjshir, that the emeralds were sold for 7,658,200 afghanis.
According to Laton, the emeralds were sold to domestic traders at an auction.
Since retaking control of Afghanistan, the Taliban have significantly expanded the extraction of the country’s mineral resources and the sale of their products.
Panjshir is one of Afghanistan’s provinces with emerald deposits, and the extraction and sale of the gemstones is considered one of the province’s sources of income.
