The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says flash floods in Parun, the capital of Nuristan province, have killed 23 people and injured 15 others.
In a report released on Tuesday, July 21, OCHA said the floods caused extensive damage to homes, markets, roads, bridges, water supply systems, and agricultural land.
According to the agency, at least 22 houses were completely destroyed, while around 45 houses, five markets, about 70 shops, four bridges, six road sections, 400 meters of retaining walls, and 450 meters of irrigation canals were damaged.
OCHA added that 25 vehicles, two carpentry workshops and their equipment, one mosque, and one private clinic were also damaged or destroyed.
The agency further reported that flooding at the migrant transit center in Torkham, Nangarhar province, killed three Afghan migrants and injured nine others.
According to the report, the floods also temporarily disrupted traffic through the Torkham border crossing and damaged shops and other livelihood-related facilities.
In Alingar district of Laghman province, agricultural land and irrigation systems were also affected by the flooding.
