Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected the United Nations’ request to suspend the deportation program for Afghan refugees.
Shafqat Ali Khan, spokesperson for Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a press conference on Friday, September 5, that this is a government decision and will be implemented.
Earlier, Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, had asked the Pakistani government to suspend the deportation process of Afghan refugees due to the deadly earthquake in Kunar.
Richard Bennett, the UN Human Rights Council’s Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan, had also made a similar request to Pakistan.
The spokesperson for Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has emphasized that there will be no suspension in this regard.
He stressed that Pakistan has adopted an open and liberal policy in issuing visas for citizens of Afghanistan.
It is worth noting that the Pakistani government had set September 1 as the deadline for the departure of refugees whose temporary residence card validity had expired.
