The Pakistani military has claimed that it has killed Qari Amjad, the self-proclaimed defense minister of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), near the Afghan border.
In a statement on Thursday, October 30, the Pakistani army said that Qari Amjad, also known as Mufti Muzahim, was killed along with three others during an operation in Bajaur district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, near the border with Afghanistan.
Pakistani media have reported that Qari Amjad had previously served as the TTP’s deputy leader based in Afghanistan, and that the United States designated him as a global terrorist in 2022.
Meanwhile, the TTP has claimed responsibility for killing 11 Pakistani soldiers along the Afghan border.
These developments come amid reports that talks between the Taliban and Pakistan may soon resume in Istanbul.
Pakistan has demanded that the Taliban formally designate the TTP as a terrorist organization and take action against the group.
