Sources from private television networks Noor and Barya have informed Hasht-e Subh Daily that the Taliban’s Media Violations Commission has decided to suspend their operations. The commission made this decision on Tuesday, April 16, citing the networks’ disregard for its recommendations and journalistic principles.
Zabih Sadat, head of Tolo News TV and a commission member, emphasized that these networks have repeatedly flouted principles and were instructed to adhere to journalistic standards. Pending a court verdict, their operations will remain halted.
Despite claims of compliance with media laws and national values, sources within the networks assert that the Taliban’s decision stems from perceived violations of Islamic and national principles.
One source from Barya TV revealed that while the gates remain open, staff have been evacuated, leaving uncertainty about the Taliban’s intentions.
The Taliban’s sudden suspension of Noor and Barya TV operations came without prior notice. Hafizullah Barakzai, head of the Afghan Independent Journalists Association (AIJA), noted the temporary closure of both networks, guided by commission members representing various institutions and the journalistic community. It’s noteworthy that Noor TV is affiliated with Salahuddin Rabbani, head of the Islamic Society Party of Afghanistan, and Barya TV with Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, head of the Islamic Party. Since reclaiming control of Afghanistan, the Taliban have exerted heavy suppression of media and journalists.
