Five years ago today, the Taliban seized the city of Zaranj, the capital of Nimroz Province.
Several government officials and security forces retreated toward the Iran border, and within a week, the Taliban took control of large parts of Afghanistan’s provinces.
Following the fall of Zaranj, the process of capturing provinces continued at a faster pace.
On August 15, 2021, the Taliban entered Kabul, and the former government of Afghanistan collapsed.
Following the group’s takeover, widespread restrictions were imposed, particularly against women and girls.
Girls and women above sixth grade were deprived of the right to education, study, work, and participation in society.
Alongside these restrictions, Afghanistan also faced widespread economic and humanitarian crises. Millions of people struggled with poverty, unemployment, and a decline in international aid.
