AFNDS Slams Proposal to Recognize Taliban as Rewarding Human Rights Abusers and Terrorism Supporters

Following the statements of Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, regarding holding a meeting to recognize the Taliban, Rahmatullah Nabil, Afghanistan’s Former National Director of Security (AFNDS), said that this would amount to rewarding human rights violators and supporters of terrorism.

Nabil expressed this view in a series of tweets on Wednesday, April 19.

He called the proposal to recognize the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan very concerning.

He wrote, “Recognizing the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan is a betrayal of Afghan women and minorities who have suffered under their rule.”

This former government security official emphasized that any recognition of the Taliban should be conditional on their respect for human rights.

During more than 21 months of Taliban rule in Afghanistan, this group has been accused several times by the United Nations of violating human rights.

It should be noted that Amina Mohammed’s statements regarding the recognition of the Taliban have been met with widespread negative reactions.
