Local sources from Kandahar have reported that the Taliban have detained three journalists in the province.
According to sources on Monday, August 14th, the Taliban arrested Ataullah Omar, Shams Omari, and Wahid-ur-Rahman Afghanmal yesterday. These individuals are currently being held in the group’s prison.
The sources indicate that the Taliban initially summoned these three journalists to discuss certain topics, following which they were detained.
As of now, the Taliban have not provided any information regarding the reason for the arrest of these journalists.
Meanwhile, reports have surfaced that Taliban intelligence forces have also detained another journalist in the Kunar province. However, these reports have not yet been confirmed by reliable sources.
This development comes as the Afghanistan Journalists Center released its latest report today. The report highlights that during the two years of Taliban rule, there have been 366 instances of violations against journalists’ rights and media freedom. These violations encompass media personnel fatalities, threats, arrests, and instances of violent treatment.
It’s noteworthy that with the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan, the group has significantly curtailed the activities of journalists and media organizations within the country.
