The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), marking World Access to Information Day, says that as the volume of information continues to grow, identifying reliable sources has become more important than ever.
UNESCO said on Monday, September 28, that the right to access information is among the fundamental principles for maintaining information credibility and integrity, an issue that has become particularly important in the age of artificial intelligence.
September 28 is observed as the International Day for Universal Access to Information.
UNESCO designated the day in 2015, and the United Nations General Assembly recognized it at the UN level in October 2019.
The day aims to raise awareness of people’s right to access information and strengthen laws and mechanisms for implementing that right.
UNESCO emphasizes that free and equal access to information can contribute to informed decision-making, the promotion of human rights, poverty reduction, innovation, and the development of inclusive societies.
The organization also says that with the expansion of digitalization, the online space has become an important tool for people to access information.
