The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that the El Niño climate phenomenon could push an additional 49 million people into acute hunger by the end of 2027.
The organization said on Wednesday, August 5, in a post on X that as the likelihood of floods, droughts, and extreme heat waves continues to increase, vulnerable regions will face an even greater risk of food insecurity.
According to the warning, the WFP is working to support vulnerable areas by strengthening preparedness before natural disasters occur and reducing the impact of climate-related crises.
By altering weather patterns, raising temperatures, and intensifying droughts and floods, El Niño poses a serious threat to global agriculture and food security, with vulnerable communities bearing the greatest burden.
