Germany has confirmed that a three-member Taliban delegation entered the country in late August.

The German Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday, September 2, that the Taliban delegation had traveled from Afghanistan to Germany and was pursuing technical and consular cooperation regarding the return of citizens of Afghanistan.

Human Rights Watch has expressed concern over Germany’s engagement with the Taliban regarding the forced return of citizens of Afghanistan.

Fereshta Abbasi, an Afghanistan researcher at Human Rights Watch, said that Germany’s cooperation with Taliban officials to deport citizens of Afghanistan was “terrible” and could expose them to serious human rights violations.

The remarks come as German media had previously reported that a three-member Taliban delegation had entered Germany on a secret trip.

The delegation arrived in Germany last Wednesday and is expected to remain in the country for three weeks.

The Taliban delegation’s trip is reportedly linked to plans for further deportations of citizens of Afghanistan from the country.
