British sources have reported that Iran-linked hackers took a power plant in Britain offline for four days in an unprecedented cyberattack last month.
Al Jazeera reported on Sunday, August 23, that the incident occurred alongside a series of attacks on US water infrastructure in July that affected 12 states and raised concerns at the White House.
According to the report, the affected power plant was relatively small. However, there are dozens of smaller power plants across Britain, many of which are connected to the internet only intermittently.
The British government has not disclosed which power plant was targeted, citing security concerns.
This comes as major cyberattacks on Britain have previously disrupted National Health Service systems, deprived schools of IT services and affected commercial manufacturing facilities, including those operated by Jaguar Land Rover.
