Local sources in Nangarhar province have confirmed a horrific incident in Jalalabad, the provincial capital, where a mullah imam, Mufti Waliullah, sexually assaulted and subsequently killed one of his students. The crime took place in the sixth district of Jalalabad, in an area known as “Khales Families.” Sources reported to the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Saturday, July 26, 2025, that Mufti Waliullah attempted to conceal his crime by disposing of the victim’s body under a bridge.
According to the same sources, this is not the first instance of such allegations against Mufti Waliullah. In March 2025, he was accused of similar acts against four other students but faced no legal repercussions at the time. The lack of accountability in the earlier cases has raised concerns about the handling of such incidents in the region. Local Taliban authorities have detained Mufti Waliullah in connection with this latest crime, though Taliban security officials in Nangarhar have yet to issue any public statements on the matter.
The incident highlights a growing issue in Afghanistan since the Taliban’s return to power. Reports of sexual assault, violence, and abuse in religious schools, particularly targeting children and students by some mullah imams, have surged at an alarming rate. This case underscores the urgent need for addressing such abuses within educational and religious institutions in the country.
