Portugal’s Prosecutor General’s Office has announced an investigation into the legality of the U.S. use of Lajes Air Base in the war with Iran following a complaint filed by a political party.
Anadolu reported early Sunday, October 4, that Portuguese prosecutors are examining whether the use of the base violated Portuguese law.
According to the report, the investigation was launched following a complaint filed by the Left Bloc party in April, calling for an examination of whether the use of the base violated domestic and international law.
The party later asked the Prosecutor General’s Office to investigate the legality of the base’s use, arguing from the outset that the move constituted a “serious violation of international law.”
José Manuel Pureza, coordinator of the Left Bloc, said at the time that the government either “supports a serious violation of international law and Portuguese law” or lacks the “political will” to “distance itself from this illegal action.”
Meanwhile, the conduct of the U.S.’s European allies in NATO during the war with Iran has faced widespread and strong criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump.
