Qatar has asked the United States to relocate Afghan refugees currently residing in the country to other nations by September 2026 and to prevent the transfer of new Afghan refugees to Qatari territory.
International media outlets reported on Friday, May 8, that according to diplomatic documents released by the U.S. State Department, Qatar and the United States have agreed to temporarily continue hosting Afghan refugees at the Al Sayliyah camp until 2026.
Qatar has emphasized that this process must remain temporary and that the status of all refugees currently residing in the camp should be determined as soon as possible.
Currently, more than 1,100 Afghan citizens who were evacuated following the collapse of Afghanistan’s former government in 2021 are being housed at this camp near Doha.
Qatar has asked Washington to take responsibility for the transfer and resettlement of these individuals after the deadline expires and to refrain from sending new Afghan refugees to the country.
The Al Sayliyah camp was used as a temporary transit and processing center for Afghan refugees during the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan in 2021.
This comes as the status of several Afghan refugees in third countries remains uncertain, with concerns about their future continuing to grow.
