Helen McEntee, Ireland’s minister for foreign affairs, has called for continued global attention to the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan at a side event on their situation held during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Ireland’s Mission to the United Nations said on Tuesday, September 22, on X that the event aimed to highlight the situation of women’s and girls’ rights in Afghanistan.
The event was attended by Nobel Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, women’s rights activist Gaisu Yari, human rights activist Mitra Mehran, and former diplomat Asila Wardak.
According to the mission, the participants emphasized the need for international engagement with Afghanistan based on human rights principles.
The meeting also discussed ways to continue supporting the rights of Afghan women and girls.
The mission thanked the Malala Fund, the United Nations Office for Partnerships, and a BBC journalist for their cooperation in organizing and moderating the event.
