UN Women says women and girls in eastern Afghanistan are facing dire humanitarian conditions amid the aftermath of the 2025 earthquake and the resumption of hostilities between Pakistan and the Taliban.
The organization reported on Thursday, June 11, that escalating conflict along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, including airstrikes, shelling, drone attacks, and ground clashes, has caused mass displacement across eastern Afghanistan.
UN Women stated that more than 100,000 people have been displaced as a result of these events.
The organization added that women and girls, already subject to increasing restrictions on their freedoms and movement under Taliban rule, are now facing the severe consequences of insecurity and successive crises.
The United Nations warned that approximately 50,000 people in affected areas are at risk of increased gender-based violence, and women’s access to healthcare and essential services has been severely curtailed.
UN Women emphasized that pregnant women in these conditions face heightened risks, including hunger and a lack of medical care, and that there is an urgent need for humanitarian support.
