The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has announced that it has provided urgent humanitarian assistance to more than 393,000 vulnerable returnees in Afghanistan.
The organization reported on Tuesday, August 18, that the assistance was provided to returnees in five border provinces from March 2025 to May 2026, with support from the European Union’s humanitarian aid.
According to the report, these returnees entered Afghanistan through border crossings in the provinces of Herat, Nimroz, Kandahar, Helmand and Nangarhar.
The organization said that, based on their immediate needs, the returnees received temporary shelter, primary healthcare, transportation and multipurpose cash assistance.
The United Nations added that the support was provided as Afghanistan faced large-scale waves of migrant returns, natural disasters and growing humanitarian needs.
The organization said that a significant increase in the return of citizens of Afghanistan from Pakistan and Iran had placed additional pressure on border facilities, essential services and host communities.
