Nasir Ahmad Faiq, Chargé d’Affaires of Afghanistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, says the rule of law requires a legitimate and accountable government, and those who hold power must also be subject to the law.
Faiq said on Friday, 9 October, at the Sixth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly that the rule of law is not limited to issuing decrees and having courts in place.
He said the Taliban’s dismantling of constitutional, legal and judicial safeguards has created conditions for the arbitrary exercise of power, discrimination and human rights violations.
Faiq also emphasised women’s right to equal rights, equal access to justice and full participation in its administration.
He called for the repeal of discriminatory measures and support for legal and judicial professionals and human rights defenders in Afghanistan.
Afghanistan’s Chargé d’Affaires to the United Nations said lasting peace requires a legitimate, representative and accountable government formed through a political process led and owned by the people of Afghanistan.
According to Faiq, such a process must be supported and facilitated by the United Nations and involve women, civil society, democratic forces and other credible Afghan stakeholders.
