Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, has called for the immediate lifting of US government sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) and stressed the need for the court to continue its investigation into the situation in Afghanistan.

Bennett wrote on his X account on Saturday, October 10, that he stands with Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in condemning US sanctions against the ICC.

He called for the immediate lifting of all these sanctions and said he continues to support the ICC’s investigation into the situation in Afghanistan.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan expressed confidence that the court’s investigation would continue and that US sanctions would not prevent it from making progress.

His remarks come as Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, described the US government’s sanctions against the ICC as “unacceptable” and called for their removal.
