Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to visit Turkey this month and meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Reuters, citing informed sources, reported Friday, October 2, that Carney and Erdogan will discuss free-trade negotiations between the two countries, which began on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara in July.
The visit will mark the first dedicated bilateral visit to Turkey by a Canadian leader.
According to the report, cooperation in the energy and defense sectors is also expected to be among the topics discussed during the meeting.
The visit comes as Carney seeks to reduce Canada’s economic dependence on the United States.
