Richard Bennett, the United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, has expressed concern over the forced deportation of Afghan refugees from regional countries and the European Union (EU).
On Friday, May 22, Bennett wrote on his X account that Afghanistan is not a safe country.
He added that the deportation of Afghans from neighboring countries and further abroad, including the European Union, is a growing concern.
He warned that returnees are at risk of harassment, arrest, torture, starvation, and worse.
According to the UN Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, international human rights obligations must be strictly respected.
This comes at a time when thousands of Afghan migrants are being forcibly expelled daily from Iran and Pakistan.
In recent days, reports have also emerged suggesting that the European Union is seeking engagement with the Taliban regarding the deportation of Afghan asylum seekers.
