The passage of 12 cargo ships through the Strait of Hormuz over the past two days indicates that the movement of ships and oil tankers through the strait has declined by two-thirds compared with previous levels.
Al Jazeera reported early Monday, September 21, that 35 ships had previously passed through the strait on Saturday and Sunday of the previous week.
According to the report, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) had earlier announced that the threat level in the waterway remained high, with at least three attacks on ships reported over the previous three days.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran’s parliament, said on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed “until the United States fulfills its commitments” under the interim peace agreement signed in June.
At the same time, the United States has continued its blockade of Iran’s southern ports and announced early Monday that, as of the previous day, it had forced 109 commercial vessels to reroute.
