Taliban members have allegedly detained and assaulted a veterinary doctor in Herat after accusing his wife of not wearing clothing that complied with the group’s dress requirements, local sources said.
Sources told The Hasht-e Subh Daily on Saturday, July 11, that the doctor’s wife was initially detained over her clothing, and he later went to seek her release.
According to the sources, Taliban members insulted the doctor during his visit to the detention facility and arrested him following a verbal altercation.
The sources said the doctor was severely beaten while in Taliban custody, suffering injuries to several parts of his body.
His condition reportedly deteriorated, and he was later transferred to a hospital for medical treatment.
The incident comes amid reports of an increase in the detention of women and girls in Herat over clothing that does not meet the Taliban’s prescribed dress code.
