United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) says journalism around the world is facing unprecedented pressure.
In a post on Facebook on Monday, July 20, UNAMA said journalists are facing serious threats, including the spread of misinformation and disinformation generated with the help of artificial intelligence, censorship, and increasing attacks against media workers.
The mission added that declining support for independent media is also posing serious threats to the future of journalism that serves the public interest.
UNAMA asked: “If free journalism is weakened, what will we lose?”
The concerns come as journalists and media outlets in Afghanistan have faced widespread restrictions, security pressures, and a shrinking media environment since the Taliban took control in 2021.
Journalist support organizations have repeatedly raised concerns over threats against reporters, censorship, limited access to information, and financial challenges facing independent media in Afghanistan.
