The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced that more than two million girls in Afghanistan remain barred from attending secondary school.
The organization said on its X page on September 2, 2026, that five years after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, UNESCO continues to support educational opportunities for people in need.
UNESCO said that the “EERA” project in Bamyan and Nuristan provinces is helping to sustain the learning process by holding literacy and skills-training classes.
According to the organization, more than 2,100 people have enrolled in these classes across 10 districts in Bamyan and Nuristan.
UNESCO added that nearly 70 percent of the applicants are women and girls.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization emphasized that every opportunity to learn matters.
