The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of the risk of botulism from consuming spoiled or improperly stored food and stressed the importance of early diagnosis of the disease.
The organization wrote on its X page on Tuesday, September 22, that botulism is a serious disease that can be caused by toxins found in contaminated food.
The WHO said that “stomach pain, vomiting, weakness, blurred vision, difficulty speaking and difficulty breathing” are among the symptoms of the disease.
According to the organization, early diagnosis of botulism and timely visits to health facilities can prevent the disease from worsening and save lives.
The WHO also stressed the importance of properly storing and preparing food, saying that following food safety principles can help prevent botulism.
