Local authorities in Nigeria say at least 36 students and one school staff member abducted during an armed attack on a school in the country’s northeast are still being held by armed men.
The Borno State Commissioner for Education said on Tuesday, June 30, that those kidnapped include 25 female students, 11 male students, and one staff member.
He added that eight people, including the school’s deputy head, were rescued from captivity.
The attack took place on Monday at a government school in the town of Lassa while students were sitting for exams.
Lassa, located in Borno State, has repeatedly been affected by militant attacks and mass kidnappings in recent years.
The incident comes amid continued insecurity and armed assaults on educational institutions in northeastern Nigeria, raising growing concerns about the safety of students and school staff.
