The United Nations Children’s Fund says that Afghanistan remains one of the largest humanitarian crises in the current year.
The fund said in a report released on Tuesday, April 14, that the crisis has been driven by years of conflict, a weak economy, and the erosion of human rights.
UNICEF added that nearly 22 million people require humanitarian assistance this year.
According to the organization, more than 11 million children are among those relying on humanitarian assistance.
The report states: “UNICEF has supported 52,934 households with pregnant and breastfeeding women through its Mother and Child Cash Transfer Programme.”
The organization added that it has assisted 354,410 people in Samangan Province.
According to the report, “To prevent malnutrition, UNICEF has provided counseling on maternal, infant, and young child nutrition to 179,955 caregivers of young children. In addition, 159,338 pregnant women have received multiple micronutrient supplements, and 350,200 children under the age of five have also received these supplements.”
In addition, about 78,700 people have gained access to safe drinking water through the construction and rehabilitation of sustainable water supply systems.
