Naseer Ahmad Faiq, Acting Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations, has said that arbitrary detentions, torture, killings, enforced disappearances and forced displacement in Afghanistan must end.
Faiq on Thursday, October 8, at the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, stressed the need to strengthen accountability and welcomed the public disclosure of arrest warrants for senior Taliban leaders by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Faiq also called for support for an independent investigative mechanism for Afghanistan and for the criminalization of gender apartheid as a crime against humanity.
He said Afghan asylum seekers should not be returned to areas where they face danger, and that humanitarian aid should reach the people of Afghanistan without discrimination and with the unrestricted participation of Afghan women.
Faiq added that the fight against terrorism cannot justify unlawful attacks on civilians or violations of Afghanistan’s territorial integrity.
The Acting Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations said engagement with the Taliban should not lead to the normalization of relations with the group, but should instead be conditional on independent and verifiable improvements in the human rights situation.
