Austria’s Interior Ministry has announced the deportation of an Afghan citizen via Istanbul, saying that the individual had committed crimes in Austria.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 1, the ministry said that Austria and Germany are among the first European countries to have resumed the direct deportation of individuals to Syria and Afghanistan.
According to the statement, the Austrian Interior Ministry said the 26-year-old Afghan citizen had committed crimes in Austria on three occasions and had served a total of more than two and a half years in prison for serious property offenses and drug-related crimes.
The ministry added that, in addition to his prison sentences, his criminal record contains 20 entries registered by the criminal police.
Meanwhile, Austria has also reported deporting more than 8,800 people whom the Interior Ministry said were residing in the country illegally during the first seven months of the current year.
However, Austria is among the first European countries to engage with the Taliban over the deportation of Afghan asylum seekers.
