Local sources report that a clash between Taliban fighters and residents erupted over the continued operation of a mine in the Shaki district of Badakhshan province, leaving four residents wounded.
Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Saturday, May 9, that Taliban fighters attempted to prevent residents from working in the mine, but locals resisted, leading to the confrontation.
According to the sources, individuals affiliated with Musa Shahriyar, the brother of Juma Fateh, a prominent Taliban commander in Badakhshan, were involved in wounding the residents.
Sources also indicate that fighters loyal to Mawlawi Ghulam Allah Kufi, the Taliban’s border battalion commander in Jawzjan province, were present during the clash.
A video obtained by the Hasht-e Subh Daily shows Taliban fighters engaging with residents and attempting to prevent them from working at the mine.
The incident comes after several Taliban fighters had previously clashed with residents over a gold mine in Badakhshan province.
Since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, non-standard extraction activities at mines across several provinces have increased, with reports indicating that a portion of these operations are being carried out illegally and without adherence to technical standards.
