The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations has called for a transparent investigation after former Afghan soldier Nazeer Paktiawal died at a U.S. immigration facility.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations said in a statement on Sunday, March 15, that anyone taken into custody must be treated with dignity and respect.

The council has urged U.S. authorities to conduct a transparent investigation into the reasons for the detention and the circumstances surrounding the death of the former Afghan soldier.

The AfghanEvac organization said on Sunday that a former Afghan soldier named Nazeer Paktiawal died in a hospital after being detained by U.S. immigration authorities.

The reason for the detention and the circumstances of the former soldier’s death have not yet been clarified.

AfghanEvac said Nazeer was a father of six who had been relocated to the United States after the collapse of the former Afghan government.

Nazeer reportedly fought alongside U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

U.S. immigration authorities have increased the detention of Afghan asylum seekers in recent days.
