Canada has announced sanctions against 10 Iranian individuals and entities over their alleged role in the “brutal suppression of Iranian protesters.”
Al Jazeera reported early Thursday, September 24, that Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced the measures.
According to the report, Anand said in a statement that Canada would use all available tools, including targeted sanctions, to respond to what she described as the Iranian government’s “abhorrent conduct,” ranging from threats to international peace and security to widespread human rights violations.
According to the statement, the sanctions target senior Iranian security and government officials, as well as state-run entities involved in the “widespread internet shutdown,” including Iskandar Momeni, Iran’s interior minister.
Relations between Canada and Iran have been strained for several years, particularly following the downing of a Ukrainian passenger plane by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
