Rabab Fatima, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), says the United Nations will continue to support the Afghan people.

Fatima made the remarks in a message on Saturday, October 24, marking the 81st anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.

“I begin my responsibilities in Afghanistan with deep respect for its people, culture and rich heritage, and I am committed to listening to their views, engaging with them and working alongside them,” she said.

The head of UNAMA said the United Nations had stood alongside the Afghan people for nearly eight decades, through periods of war and hardship as well as times of progress and opportunity.

Fatima added that Afghanistan’s future belongs to its people and that the United Nations, as a committed partner, would remain alongside Afghans as they shape their own future.
