The European Union has allocated €12 million to provide healthcare, nutrition and water services to more than 347,000 people in southern and southwestern Afghanistan.
The assistance will be delivered through the international organisation INTERSOS, in cooperation with Solidarités International and Médecins du Monde.
The programme will run from June 1, 2026, to May 31, 2027, across 28 districts in the provinces of Kandahar, Zabul, Uruzgan, Helmand, Farah and Nimroz.
The project is also expected to indirectly benefit nearly 1.27 million additional people.
Furthermore, 39,175 people will receive assistance through emergency responses to disease outbreaks, climate-related disasters and displacement.
The assistance comes as the European Union says approximately 21.9 million people in Afghanistan will need humanitarian aid in 2026.
Children under the age of five, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with disabilities, and families living in remote and underserved areas are among the groups facing significant barriers to accessing essential services.
The European Union said the assistance aims to provide essential, life-saving services to the most vulnerable people in underserved areas of Afghanistan.
The programme will also seek to prevent preventable diseases and deaths and strengthen the capacity of crisis-affected communities to cope with emergencies.
