Hakan Fidan has announced that Turkey is prepared to assist with mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz if requested by the parties involved, while emphasizing the importance of reopening the strategic waterway.
Speaking to JTBC during a visit to South Korea on Sunday, June 7, Fidan said that if Turkey is asked to participate in mine-clearing efforts, Ankara would be willing to cooperate.
He added that Turkey follows a principled approach to regional conflicts, including the war between Russia and Ukraine, and is prepared to play a supportive role once the parties reach an agreement.
Fidan also stated that reopening the Strait of Hormuz is currently more urgent than the nuclear issue itself, warning that a prolonged closure of the waterway could have far-reaching consequences for the global economy and food security.
The Turkish foreign minister expressed optimism about ongoing negotiations, saying that both the United States and Iran appear interested in reducing tensions and that talks are moving toward a shared framework.
He added that Turkey remains in regular contact with both sides, as well as regional mediators, although some technical issues in the negotiations have yet to be resolved.
Fidan further accused Israel of obstructing the negotiation process and called on the international community to pressure the country to support diplomatic efforts.
