Russia’s Foreign Ministry has announced that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar discussed the situation in Afghanistan and the region.
The ministry said in a statement on Monday, August 24, that India’s foreign minister traveled to Moscow to participate in the Russia-India Intergovernmental Commission meeting.
According to the statement, the foreign ministers of the two countries discussed the situations in Afghanistan, Iran, and Ukraine.
The two ministers also discussed joint cooperation within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, BRICS, and the Group of 20.
Although Russia is currently the only country in the world that recognizes the Taliban at the state level, it has expressed significant concerns about drug trafficking, terrorist activities, and the presence of ISIS in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.
Meanwhile, India has also increased its diplomatic engagement with the Taliban in Afghanistan since their return to power.
