The National Disaster Management Authority under Taliban control has warned that hundreds of homes may need to be evacuated after part of Chehel Seton Mountain in Kabul’s seventh district slid.
Mohammad Yusuf Hamad, spokesperson for the authority, said on Saturday, September 19, that several residential homes are at risk and that the relocation of families living in vulnerable areas to safe locations will begin soon.
Following a visit to the site, Hamad said cracks had appeared near the Chehel Seton Minaret and that possible rainfall could increase the risk of further landslides.
The Taliban has attributed the situation primarily to unregulated excavation and stone extraction from the mountain’s slopes.
The authority also urged residents to avoid approaching the area and to report any significant changes to officials.
