According to international media reports, France has begun technical consultations with the Taliban on the return of Afghan nationals with criminal records.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported on Wednesday, October 7, that the talks concern people who are in France illegally and are considered by French authorities to pose a “threat” to public order.
The process particularly includes individuals who have been convicted of involvement in drug trafficking or violence against others.
Meanwhile, AFP quoted a diplomatic source as saying that the technical talks do not mean France has changed its position toward the Taliban.
France has not maintained diplomatic relations with the Taliban since the group returned to power in August 2021, and the French Embassy in Kabul remains closed.
