8am, Kabul: The United Nations has announced that Ashraf Ghani’s government representative will speak on behalf of Afghanistan at the UN General Assembly. In the meantime, the representative of Myanmar has been removed from the list of speakers due to the military coup and the overthrow of an elected government in that country.
According to Reuters, Ghulam Mohammad Ishaqzai, a representative of Ashraf Ghani’s government, will address the UN General Assembly on Monday after consultations on Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations with the Taliban taking office.
Meanwhile, the representative of Myanmar has been banned from speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York due to the military coup in that country and the overthrow of the elected government.
Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, in the meantime, called for a speech at the UN summit last week. The Taliban had named Sohail Shahin, a spokesman for the Taliban’s political bureau in Qatar, as Afghanistan’s representative to the UN.
It has been said that until the relevant committees in the UN have decided on the credentials of the representatives of Afghanistan and Myanmar, Ishaqzai and Kyaw Moe Tun will represent their respective countries.
