The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has announced that 275 hand-operated water pumps have been installed or repaired in Gulran district of Herat province.

The organization said on Wednesday, October 22, that the initiative had improved access to safe drinking water for 38,500 people.

According to the ICRC, illnesses among local residents have also declined following the implementation of the project.

A lack of safe drinking water remains a public health challenge in rural areas of Afghanistan.

Limited access to clean water increases the risk of waterborne diseases.

Installing and repairing water pumps can improve families’ access to safe drinking water and reduce the risk of illnesses associated with contaminated water.
