Sources in Kandahar province say that Taliban leader Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada has ordered the suspension of work to expand the fiber-optic network.
Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Sunday, September 20, that the Taliban leader has ordered work on the fiber-optic project to be suspended across Afghanistan until further notice.
According to the sources, the Taliban leader issued the order without providing a reason and has instructed the group’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to delay the project.
Sources say the suspension of the fiber-optic project has disrupted voice and other telecommunications services in several provinces, preventing people from using these services properly.
Fiber optics are cables that transmit information through light rather than electricity.
As a result, compared with conventional cables, fiber-optic cables can transmit larger amounts of data at higher speeds and serve as the foundation for fixed, high-capacity internet networks.
