The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has announced that the return of migrants from Iran and Pakistan, rising prices of essential goods, and a shortage of funding for humanitarian assistance are worsening the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
The organization reported on Thursday, October 15, that more than 1.2 million people had returned from Iran and Pakistan so far in 2026, placing additional pressure on vulnerable communities.
According to the report, border closures and disruptions to the transportation of goods through the Strait of Hormuz and other major trade routes have driven up the prices of essential commodities.
FAO added that funding shortages have also limited the capacity of humanitarian organizations to assist, while families’ need for urgent support continues to grow.
The organization warned that these challenges, combined with the approaching winter, could increase hunger and malnutrition in Afghanistan and place further pressure on vulnerable families.
