Civil society organisations and human rights defenders have called on the United Nations (UN), in an open letter, to stop the Taliban’s seizure of private land and homes and the forced eviction of residents of Omid-e Sabz Township.
The letter states that pressure from the Taliban on residents of Omid-e Sabz Township has increased.
Most residents of the township are Shia Hazaras, and these pressures threaten the livelihoods, health, and security of thousands of them.
According to the signatories, approximately 11,500 families, comprising nearly 80,000 people, are at risk of displacement.
The signatories have condemned the Taliban’s actions in Omid-e Sabz Township and other parts of Afghanistan and called for an end to these practices.
They have also called for the pattern of harassment of Hazaras by the Taliban to be addressed in the next report of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
The signatories stressed that the Afghanistan Independent Investigative Mechanism should document and preserve evidence related to forced displacement and land seizures to enable those responsible to be held accountable and facilitate subsequent legal proceedings.
